TIME-SENSITIVE MATTER
3 months

Validate a European patent in Turkey.

Usually counted from the date of mention of grant in the European Patent Bulletin. Turkish translation and local formalities need review. The additional three-month period requires the publication fee and surcharge to be paid within the initial period; see the conditions below.

Calendar-month estimate only. Official notification, service rules, non-working days and any special procedure may change the final day. We confirm the deadline from the actual file; do not rely on this tool for filing.

THE NEXT STEP

Check the EP grant and Turkish translation.

For European patent validation, provide the EP number, grant publication details and the text to be validated in Turkey. The validation instruction must identify the translation and local filing work required, rather than treating it as a new national patent application.

Confirm the grant

Share the EP number and grant publication details.

02

Plan translation

Review the Turkish specification and applicable filing requirements.

03

Maintain protection

Set up local renewal monitoring after validation.

PRACTICAL SERVICE GUIDE

European patent validation in Turkey: grant text and translation

After European grant, Turkish requirements should be checked using the final granted text and grant event. The EPO’s Turkey guidance identifies Turkish translation requirements and local representation requirements for applicants without residence or a principal place of business in Turkey.

The three-month period and conditional extension

The ordinary period for filing the Turkish translation is three months from publication of the mention of grant in the European Patent Bulletin. A further three-month period is available only if both the translation publication fee and the extension surcharge are paid within the initial three-month period. Paying after that initial period does not automatically secure the extension.

The estimator shows the initial three-month date. Send the grant bulletin details and any payment evidence if you need the extension checked. Owners with neither residence nor their principal place of business in Turkey must appoint an authorised local professional representative.

Plan validation and maintenance as separate tasks

Use the final granted specification

Send the EP reference, grant information and final granted text. Earlier application claims may differ from the grant and should not be treated as the translation source without checking.

Agree translation, submission and reporting

Confirm the applicable date from the grant event, agree the Turkish translation and local submission, then retain the filing evidence. Patent annual fees and later changes following European proceedings require separate attention.

Documents to send for an assessment

  • EP number
  • grant publication information
  • final specification, claims and drawings
  • proprietor details
  • amendments or ownership changes relevant to the instruction

What our representation covers

Review the grant record, agree the translation text and scope, prepare the local submission and report completion. We identify maintenance matters that should be addressed after validation.

Costs and the written quotation

The quotation depends on the length of the granted specification, translation, timing and proprietor changes.

Confirm specification length, translation preparation or review, local filing and official publication costs. Any conditional extension work must be identified in the accepted quotation.

What happens after the instructed action?

Later EPO changes or maintenance obligations can require additional attention. Keep the final submitted translation and filing report together with the European record.

Does a Unitary Patent cover Turkey?

No. Unitary Patent protection does not extend to Turkey. Turkish post-grant requirements and local maintenance must be considered separately for a European patent designating Turkey.

FOR OVERSEAS APPLICANTS AND IP FIRMS

Prepare a complete European patent validation package

Confirm the grant record

Send the EP publication number, the date of the mention of grant in the European Patent Bulletin and the granted specification. A decision to grant and the publication of the mention of grant are different records.

Confirm the text to translate

Identify the granted description and claims, drawings and any text that has been amended. Tell us if a Turkish translation is available and whether review or preparation is requested.

Define the filing deliverable

Ask the quotation to distinguish translation, local filing, official publication costs and any extension-related work. Confirm the reporting recipient and accepted instruction before relying on a filing arrangement.

Plan maintenance separately

Validation and subsequent Turkish annual fee payments are separate tasks. Identify who will monitor maintenance and instruct any later payments.
