YOUR QUESTION

How can a foreign company register a trademark in Turkey?

We review the sign, applicant details and goods or services, advise on the relevant classes and prepare a Turkish filing. An earlier-rights search can help identify risks before filing.

THE NEXT STEP

Check the mark and define the goods or services.

A Turkish trademark filing starts with the proposed mark, applicant and goods or services. Confirm whether the instruction is a direct national application or relates to a Madrid designation, and identify any priority claim before the filing scope is agreed.

We review the proposed mark, owner details and goods or services.

02

At filing

We prepare the Turkish application and confirm its filing details.

We monitor examination, publication and any objections that arise.

PRACTICAL SERVICE GUIDE

Trademark registration in Turkey: documents, scope and costs

A filing should match both the identity of the owner and the goods or services the business actually needs to protect. A word mark and a logo application may serve different purposes; a class number alone does not describe the full scope of protection. We discuss the proposed mark, intended activities and any earlier application before preparing filing instructions.

From filing to registration

  1. Prepare the application: confirm the owner, mark and exact goods or services, and agree any availability search.
  2. File before TÜRKPATENT: obtain the application reference and filing date.
  3. Examination and publication: the Office examines the application; accepted applications are published for third-party opposition.
  4. Address any objection: an office refusal or opposition may require separate instructions and additional work.
  5. Complete registration: fulfil the notified registration requirements, including payment of the registration fee, before obtaining the registration record.

Applicants domiciled outside Turkey need an authorised Turkish trademark attorney for a direct national application. An international filing through the Madrid Protocol has a different submission route, although a Turkish refusal may require local representation.

For representation, provide the exact applicant name, legal status and address. We supply any authorisation or power-of-attorney document required for the instructed procedure and confirm the signing formalities before you arrange execution. Filing and registration are separate milestones; the quotation should identify which stages it covers.

Trademark filing routes and the scope of your instruction

National filing or Madrid designation?

A direct Turkish application is handled before TÜRKPATENT. A Madrid designation starts through the international system and may still require a local response in Turkey. Send your existing application or registration details and target goods or services so we can assess which route fits the instruction.

Search, filing and later responses

An availability search assesses earlier marks; filing submits the application. Neither guarantees registration. Ask the quotation to specify the search scope, class preparation, application work and reporting. Confirm whether the later registration fee, translations and responses to refusals or oppositions are included or quoted separately.

Documents to send for an assessment

  • The exact word or clear logo file
  • applicant name, legal status and address
  • a description of goods and services
  • details of any earlier filing and proposed priority claim

What our representation covers

Review the proposed filing scope, discuss the need for a separate availability search, prepare the goods and services specification and submit the agreed application. We report the filing reference and explain how examination and publication fit into the subsequent procedure.

Costs and the written quotation

The quotation depends on the number of classes, search scope, word mark or logo instructions and any priority documents.

Confirm class coverage, application fees and whether later registration-stage work is included. Search work and responses to objections should be identified separately; the quotation states taxes and payment currency.

What happens after the instructed action?

A filing receipt records an application; it is not a registration certificate. Refusals or third-party oppositions can require additional work. We explain the next stage when a communication arrives rather than treating submission as the end of the process.

Can I use my UK or EU registration to protect my brand in Turkey?

A foreign registration does not by itself create a Turkish registration. Direct national filing and a Madrid designation are different routes. Tell us your existing registrations, owner details and target scope so we can discuss the appropriate route.

How long does trademark registration take?

The time to registration depends on the Office’s examination, the two-month publication period and whether a refusal or opposition arises. A filing receipt confirms submission, not registration. We can discuss the likely stages after reviewing your mark and filing route; an exact registration date cannot be guaranteed.

How should I prepare the power of attorney?

Send the applicant’s exact legal name, status and address first. We confirm the authorisation format and signing requirements for the instructed procedure. Ask us whether a scanned copy is sufficient for your file before arranging originals, notarisation or legalisation.

FOR OVERSEAS APPLICANTS

Choose local representation for your Turkish trademark filing

Whether you are a brand owner or an overseas IP firm, start with the proposed mark, applicant and goods or services. Our Istanbul office can coordinate the agreed Turkish application work and report the filing reference to your nominated contact.

Before instructing

Tell us if you need an availability assessment, specification review or filing only. A Turkish trademark search is a separately defined task.

Understand the quotation

Confirm application work, official filing fees and later registration-stage costs separately. Refusal appeals, opposition responses and renewals are additional instructions unless expressly included.

What we report

Agree the report recipients and firm reference. Filing details, submitted materials and subsequent office communications are handled within the accepted reporting scope.

Foreign associate instructions

See our foreign IP firm workflow for client references, communication and billing requirements.

How to register a trademark in Turkey

Choose a national application or a Madrid designation

For a direct Turkish application, identify the applicant, mark and goods or services. If you have an eligible basic application or registration, a Madrid designation is another route to consider. Our Istanbul office handles direct Turkish filings and local procedures affecting Turkish designations.

Trademark registration in Turkey for foreign applicants

Applicants domiciled outside Turkey need an authorised Turkish trademark representative for direct proceedings before TÜRKPATENT. This is a residence-based requirement. A Madrid designation is different: appointing a Turkish representative is not a prerequisite simply to designate Turkey through the international system.

Check the brand name before filing

An earlier-rights search helps assess the proposed brand and specification before an application is instructed. See our Turkish trademark search service. An EU or UK registration does not itself provide trademark protection in Turkey.

Ask for filing costs and a defined scope

Send the mark, applicant country, goods or services and any priority details. We identify the local work, information still needed and quotation scope. A request for a quote is not an accepted filing instruction. Request a Turkish trademark filing quote.

Received a refusal after designating Turkey?

A filing enquiry and a refusal response are different matters. If WIPO has sent a Turkish refusal, use our Madrid provisional refusal response service and send the complete notice.

How long does trademark registration take in Turkey?

The total time is the time for preparation, Office examination, publication and completion of registration. The publication stage lasts two months; the other stages depend on the file and Office processing. A fixed overall registration date cannot be promised.

1. Prepare and submit

Confirm the mark, applicant, goods and services, priority details and authorisation. Incomplete instructions or documents delay submission. We report the filing reference after the instructed application is submitted.

2. Office examination

TÜRKPATENT checks the application and examines the relevant refusal grounds. A formal deficiency or refusal adds a separate correction or appeal stage.

3. Publication and opposition

A published application is open to opposition for two months. An opposition can add response, decision and appeal stages; publication does not itself mean the mark is registered.

4. Registration completion

If the application can proceed, the registration-stage requirements and payment must be completed in time. Missing a requested document or registration payment can prevent completion.

Send your filing reference or proposed mark for a stage-specific assessment. Ask about your Turkish registration timeline.
